Getting married in the electronic age

So seriously, this whole getting hitched thing, in the age of the webbertubes is really difficult to manage.

First problem – Carrie’s email address is firstnamelastname @ gmail. Well, her last name is going to change. Gmail won’t let you rename your email account, so that’s the first problem. Second problem is that firstnamenewlastname @ gmail is taken. So she has to think of a new email address. I think I got one for her that is a variant, but that’s gonna be annoying. Plus, she’s gotta figure out how to do the whole migration from old gmail to new gmail, etc. Which would probably be more annoying for me than it is for her, since I store so much in my gmail, but she doesn’t, really.

Issue the second – Flickr. We both have our own Flickrs. This was fine when we were our own people. But now, we share cameras. So what ends up happening is, all the photos end up on my Flickr. This annoys Carrie, because it makes her Flickr look lame. So the decision is, do we combine our Flickrs? Or create a new Flickr for “the two of us” and keep the individual ones? Or maybe just move our “combined” photos into a Picasa web album and still keep our own Flickrs?

Now, the website. We have carriematt.com right now, which is being used for our wedding website. But I’d like to have a site for our new family. Because, one day, it will be more than Carrie and Matt. Of course, all the names I can think of are taken. TheStrattons.com – taken. StrattonFamily.com – taken. Grr.

Any advice you guys out there might have for any of these issues? Suggestions for a good domain name for our “family” site?

  1. my web site is poetcandance.com all my pictures post there so no flicker for me and my home e-mail is erica@poetcandance.com cause I was always hoping one day I’d get married. I never use my whole real name in e-mail accounts except work since my husband is a parrinoid freak.

What is Carries full name going to be? Middle name or initial or madien name – would that end up to long? CarrieMiddleInitalStation@gmail? ect. ect. Erik’s is eriksdr@yahoo just his middle initial and first two letters of his last name. Carrie5683@gmail (5683 spells LOVE on a phone) Just like my handle: Princess5342 (5342 spells LEIA on a phone)

    Web ideas:
    danceofthestrattons.com
    strattonlife.com
    strattondaytoday.com
    daytodaystratton.com
    adayinthelifeofstratton.com
    daybydaystratton.com
    adaywithstrattons.com
    sunshinestrattons.com
    strattonbeats.com
    strattonunited.com
    allinthestratton.com
    allmystrattons.com
    asthestrattonsturn.com
    swingstrat.com
    lovemystratton.com

Just a few ideas. Good luck!

  2. I actually got her carrie.x.stratton for her new gmail (x being replaced by her middle initial), but we’re afraid people will forget the middle initial, and carriestratton@gmail will get all her mail (she has this problem now; her last name is Flechter, but everyone thinks it is Fletcher, so the poor girl with carriefletcher@gmail gets a ton of mail for Carrie). Wackky.

    I like strattonlife.com. That’s a good one! I think I’ll go snag it.

  3. stratton.name

  4. what about cstratton@gmail?

  5. what about cstratton@gmail?

  6. Maureen bought a new domain (maureenmarkelz.com), we both moved to gmail after we were married so she didn’t have that issue. We don’t have a combined web site… as mine is too geeky for her 🙂 Sometimes you need your own virtual space!

We do have a combined Flickr Account though and just renamed the screen name to Markelz Family.

Julee gets a bummed to because all the pictures end up on my flickr account too even a couple of them are hers. However, I take most of the pictures and I mainly do all the post processing workflow (crops, color fixes, uploading) she does help a lot with the captions though.

She got her own camera now so I imagine that she will be posting more of her own and when they are both of they will just go on my flickr account.

Once she came up with an idea to post them to both accounts but that bothered me in so many ways I had to squash it without telling her exactly why.

I suppose we could get a louandjulee flickr account but I’m not ready for that much commitment yet.

Sorry, didn’t answer any of your questions but I wanted you to know that this is a problem for the “living in sin couples too”

  9. How about

    themugsys

    or

    mugsyfamily

    ?

    I know.

    I’m just being nutty.

Seriously, when you pick your domain name can’t you just set up carrie@newdomainname to go to her gmail account?

  10. Does it have to have stratton in the domain name? Can you have some random domain name? I use velvetglove.org for all my stuff – if Hannah and I get married we can use the domain without much more fuss.

  11. Hey, I just spent fifteen bucks to stop being Mugsy! 🙂

Seriously, though, you’re right, that she could always switch to the family email (it’ll be set up via Gmail Apps anyway, so she can have the gmail look). The problem with just forwarding it to the old gmail is that when she replies to people, it will come from that old address (I know you can change the “from”, but it does a weird “on behalf of” when you do that via Gmail).

  13. It needs “Stratton” in that it is supposed to reflect the group/family. I want something that will be easy for others to remember – I don’t want my uncle having to remember that our site is “www.moogtasticdoodles.com” or something. Now, if there WAS something more random-sounding that actually described us well (and would be lasting), that could be cool.

I did register strattonlife.com, for starters.

(Velvetglove.org is cool, and you also have it established, so it’s a little different IMHO)

  15. I kind of think the reason I am resistant to the combined Flickr thing is that my Flickr (like yours) isn’t just snapshots and event photos…if I take an artistically awesome shot, I want “Matt Stratton” on it, not “Stratton Family”. But, like you, I don’t like the idea of x-posting the same picture to multiple accounts.

I think the way to go would be to keep our own, and maybe have a group we both contribute to, which could then feed other things. But we still have the same problem of picking who gets to upload what pictures. The main reason that I’ve been pushing them all on my Flickr is similar to your reason – I like the way photos are managed on my Mac better, and I like having the offline versions of the photos all in the same place (rather than some on Carrie’s computer and some on my computer, etc).

    Hmmm.

  16. I guess I was thinking that the “combined” website would be in addition to individuals – I would keep this LJ, even if we started a “family” blog, because there are things I use my blog for that aren’t “family” related, etc.

But the same thing applies to Flickr, which is why it’s hard to combine those as well. See my post to Lou below about why I find that one hard 🙂

  17. Taken.

  18. Already taken. Although I did also grab strattoncentral.com just now.

  19. Is holycrapmattandcarriespawned.com taken?

Re: her email.. what about stratton_carrie at gmail ?

  22. re: Flickr
Buy your bride to be her own camera (or buy yourself a new one and give her the old one), keep your individual accounts for the “artsy” photos and create a new account for the two of you for the everyday run of the mill family snapshot type of stuff. My husband just recently went out and bought himself an inexpensive point and shoot to photograph his various projects/hobbies he works on. He claimed I was “hogging” the camera and whenever he wanted to take an in progress photo of a project he didn’t have anything to take it with. I take the camera everywhere with me, especially since I have hopped on the project 365 bandwagon. The camera sharing thing just didn’t work for us.

  24. Actually, I think I just need to buy myself another camera. We already have two, but we tend to “share” the smaller, P&S one). My S2 just doesn’t fit in a pocket as nicely as the Casio does.

Nice job doing Project 365. I think I only managed 7 days, although one of my random shots from that is one of the only pictures I ever managed to get into Explore 🙂

  26. I like strattonlife.com! I was too slow to get in “StratTastic.com (but “how many “t’s” again???” might be a problem), lifeinthestrattonsphere, or strattonworld.

    “moogtasticdoodles.com” is pretty catchy! (o;
